It provided technical consultancy service at early days after establishment, and later shifted to offer designing services to meet market demands. It has become one of the most competitive local independent auto designing companies, and owns nearly 70 foreign experts who are engaging in the development.
IAT was founded in September 2002 by Mr. Xuan Qiwu, an engineer in the field of internal combustion engine who had studied and worked in Japan for ten years. His original intention for establishing IAT is to offer Chinese car manufacturers with technical consultancy service, by relying on his experience and interpersonal connection accumulated during his work in Mitsubishi Motors Corporation. Later, in order to meet the market demand, IAT shifted its focus to vehicle and engine design. It has established stable partnership with more than 20 group customers, including FAW Group, Dongfeng Motor, Guangzhou Automobile Group, Jiangling Motors Group, Hainan Mazda, Brilliance Auto Group and Chery Automobile. IAT currently has more than 700 employees, among whom 400 are the design and engineering personnel, including about 70 experts from Japan, South Korea and other countries. The company annually develops 4 to 5 vehicles; its revenue at 2009 exceeds RMB260 million yuan, and the revenue target at 2010 is RMB 400 million yuan.
IAT is one of the most powerful local independent auto design companies in China. The domestic automotive design enterprises have very wide business range, and mostly have not started operation for a long time, so their scale and level vary greatly. Under this context, these enterprises have not been incorporated into the statistics of the governments, industry associations and research institutions. However, according to the estimate of auto design professionals at home and abroad, in Beijing and Shanghai, there are a total of about 300~400 automobile design entities each with more than 20 employees and more, while the market size relevant to the automobile-related design may reach tens of billion yuan.
Having automotive design capabilities is the premise for achieving Chinese’s long-standing dream of independent automobile manufacture. In 1950s, China produced the first Red Flag sedan. In the mid-1960s, the BJ212 off-road jeeps were put into mass production and used for military purpose. However, large scale vehicle manufacturing was gradually conducted after the reform and opening up in 1978. In the following 20 years, the Chinese automobile enterprises mainly resorted to the way of establishing joint ventures with foreign investors, and adopted the mode of assembling parts from foreign countries to exchange the market for automobile technology.
